Wagagai is its peak and it is the 4th highest in East Africa standing at 4,321 meters above sea level. Mount Elgon National Park hosts the world’s largest Caldera.
The ancient mountain is locally believed to be the origin of the Bagisu and the Sabiny tribes whose founding ancestor Masaba emerged from a cave on the slopes of the mountain many years ago. This is why the tribe also referred to as “Bamasaba” call the mountain Mount Masaba.
Elgon Mountain has smaller crater lakes and hot springs which were created by Pleistocene glacial activity.

The mountain provides stunning opportunities to view wildlife and birdlife. It has an amazing number of animals such as the forest monkeys, antelopes, buffaloes, elephants, to mention but a few. Birds that have been spotted here include the forest birds as well as several endemics adapted to East Africa’s montane moorlands. Some of the unique bird species found in Mount Elgon National Park include the Jacksons Francolin, Marsh Widowbird, Moorland Francolin, Hunters Citicola, Red-throated Wryneck, Moustached Green Tinkerbird, Black-collared Apalis, Alpine Chat and Weyns Weaver.
The ancient caves paintings close to the trailhead at Budadiri, the spectacular caves and the hot springs which are within the crater also attract several visitors.
Some cultural events such as the “Imbalu” translated as male circumcision and other ceremonies held locally are unique to see and watch.
