Hiking trips to the Rwenzori Mountains

Brief Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive at Entebbe airport and transfer the hotel

Day 2: Drive to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and proceed to Murchison Falls National Park

Day 3: Morning game drive and afternoon boat trip

Day 4: Drive to Kibale National Park, relax at the lodge

Day 5: Chimpanzee tracking and community walk

Day 6: Drive to Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Day 7-9: Trekking Mount Rwenzori

Day 10: Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park, you can decide to do a game drive

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Entebbe Airport and transfer to hotel

Upon arrival at Entebbe airport, you will meet our representative (your driver/guide who will be there waiting for you. He will ensure that you have all your luggage and he will drive you to your accommodation in Entebbe or around Entebbe.

Entebbe is a quiet and beautiful town located on the shores of Lake Victoria that easily and best explored on foot.  Places to visit in Entebbe include the Uganda Wildlife Center (UWEC) where you can see the tigers and Uganda’s native wildlife. You can also visit the local markets to buy clothes and crafts, the Botanical Gardens on Lake Victoria where you can walk among beautiful trees watching monkeys move through the canopy above, spot several indigenous species of birds.

Day 2: Drive to Murchison Falls National Park via Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

After early breakfast we will depart for Murchison Falls National Park. Stopover at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary for Rhino tracking. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is the only place in Uganda where Rhino tracking is done. Afterwards, proceed to Murchison Falls National Park where you will visit the top of the falls.

Day 3: Morning game drive and boat trip to the bottom of the falls

Have a very early breakfast and do an early morning game drive in the beautiful Murchison Falls National Park. The game drive will introduce you to big herds of buffalos, elephants, prides of lions, leopards, birds, to mention but a few.

Return to the lodge for lunch and prepare for the afternoon boat ride on the Victoria Nile up to the bottom of the majestic Murchison Falls. The trip on the boat gives perfect opportunities and a platform to see and take great photos of several bird species.

Day 4: Drive to Kibale National Park

This day you will drive to Kibale National Park. The journey takes you along the scenic Albertine rift valley escarpment and the countryside. You will love the dramatic views of, the traditional homesteads, beautiful views of the Rwenzoris dubbed the mountains of the moon. Arrive at the lodge for dinner an overnight.
Kibale National Park is a spectacular rainforest best known as the Primates Capital of the world. The forest hosts 13 primate species such as chimpanzees, baboons, black and white colobus, grey cheeked mangabey, L’Hoest monkey, among others. Birds such as the great blue turaco can be found here.

Day 5: Chimpanzee tracking and Community walk

Wake up in the morning for breakfast, and drive to the park headquarters for a chimpanzee tracking briefing. Walk in the jungle searching for the chimpanzees that share 98% DNA with man. You can also upgrade this 1-hour tracking experience to a 4-tracking Chimpanzee Habituation Experience.

In the afternoon, you may decide to do a community walk in the community, or a nature walk in the Bigodi Wetland.

Day 6: Drive to Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Have breakfast and drive to the Mountains of the Moon, where a physical activity (hiking) awaits you.
Rwenzori National Park dubbed “The Mountains of the Moon” is located along the western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The mountain side is decorated with huge tree heathers and colorful mosses mixed with gigantic lobelias and natural flowers, which create a reminiscent of the JJR Tolkien’s film Lord of the Rings.

The mountain ranges have several peaks such as Mount Stanley’s Margherita (5,109m), the third-highest peak in Africa and Alexandra (5,083). The mind-blowing slopes of the mountains are covered in moorland, bamboo and pretty moist montane forest.

It takes up to 7 days or more to hike to the peak, but on this trip you will hike to the closer points of the ranges basically to visit the water bodies and other features.

Day 7 - 9: Rwenzori Mountains trek

After early breakfast, the driver guide will drive you to the park headquarters where you will meet with the rest of the hiking team and receive a briefing about the trek you are going to do. After the briefing, start your 3 days Rwenzori Mountains trekking experience.

On day 9, you will meet your driver guide at the park gate to transfer you to a hotel to relax and rest.

Day 10: Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. You may decide to do a game drive in the evening

Have breakfast and transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda’s most visited national park and one of the best places for game viewing. Animals to expect include lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, so many hippos, crocodiles, among others.

Day 11: Game drive in the morning and sunset boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel

Do an early morning game drive in the plains to encounter with the early risers such as the lions, kobs, elephants, hyenas, and other wild animals.

In the afternoon, you do boat trip on the Kazinga Channel, one of Uganda’s Highlights. It is believed to have the highest concentration of hippos in the world. Afterwards, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight.

Day 12: Drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest through the Ishasha Sector, the home of the tree climbing lions

Depending on the sector or location of permits, after breakfast we shall do our last game drive in Ishasha to see the tree climbing lions. Afterwards we drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park passing through different interesting villages with beautiful views of the mountains and hills.
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the unique jungles with several species of animals such as monkeys, forest elephants, among others. Bwindi is one of the two places in Uganda where you can track the mountain gorillas!

Day 13: Gorilla tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Today, it’s the gorilla tracking day! Early in the morning you will go to the park headquarters for a briefing about the do and don’ts during the activity. Depart with your ranger into the jungle searching for one of the world’s most interesting and endangered animal, the Mountain Gorilla. Spend one hour with them enjoying this life time unforgettable experience!

Day 14: Transfer to Entebbe Airport for your flight back home

Have breakfast in the morning and embark on your transfer to Entebbe to catch your international flight back home
